O God Of Creation National Anthem Lyrics

Oh God of creation,
Direct our noble cause
Guide our leaders right
Help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace and justice shall reign.

Why Was The First Nigerian National Anthem Changed

The first anthem titled “Nigeria We Hail Thee!” was written by a Briton, Lillian Jean William and the music was composed by Frances Berda without any input by Nigrians.

Due to criticisms thrown at the anthem and an agitation to have it changed, a national competition was held for the purpose of choosing a new one with a committee created to choose the best entry. In 1978, Nigeria had a new anthem to replace its first post-independence anthem.

The current anthem,” Arise O compatriots” was selected from the lyrics of 5 winning entries and fused into one. The entries were from P. O . Aderogbu, Babatunde Ogunnaike, John Ikechukwu, Eme Etim Akpan, and Sotu Omoigwi. The Director of Music in the Nigeria Police band, Benedict Odiase selected the lyrics, fused and composed it to what we have as the Nigeria National Anthem.

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” is the former national anthem of Nigeria, used from independence in 1960 until 1978. Nigeria’s present anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” was adopted in 1978, replacing “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was adopted as Nigeria’s first national anthem on October 1, 1960. The anthem’s lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria when it achieved independence. Frances Berda composed the music for “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” The second national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” replaced “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” in 1978.

The old Nigerian national anthem song lyrics is as follows:

Nigeria we hail thee
Our own dear native land
Though tribes and tongue may differ
In brotherhood we stand
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

O God of all creation
Grant this our one request.
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
